#Conference: 12th International flavor conference (Greece, May 26-30)

Monday 18 May 2009 11:03 AM

BenchTOF-dx will be the focus of a poster submission at the 12th International flavor conference in Skiathos, Greece at the end of May.

The title and abstract are:

The analysis of complex fragrance samples using a new high sensitivity bench top time of flight mass spectrometer, incorporating on-line dynamic background compensation

Lara Kelly, Gareth Roberts

The analysis of complex samples such as essential oils/fragrances etc typically combines the techniques of gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy (GC/MS) for compound detection and identification. An important aspect of GC/MS analysis is spectral acquisition rates, spectral purity and the relationship to sensitivity. Conventional “Quad” based MS systems have limited scan rates and sensitivity values and produce spectra which are skewed across the TIC. To combine high sensitivity with full scan data and (non-skewed) fast spectral acquisition requires time-of-flight (TOF) mass spectroscopy. A new high performance bench top TOF system has been developed and fragrance/essential oil samples analysed to exploit these performance characteristics. Data will be supplied showing very fast spectral acquisition rates (10,000 scans/second) with high sensitivity.

Software algorithms within the TOF system enable on-line dynamic background compensation of data which significantly reduces noise and baseline anomalies, and examples will be shown to demonstrate this.
