TargetView application: Perfume analysis
Fragrance analysis using GC/TOF MS (BenchTOF-dx) and TargetView
The fragrance industry is subject to regulations regarding the concentration of certain allergenic compounds present in their products. The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) names 24 allergens whose concentrations must be limited. Mass production, as in the fragrance industry, relies on fast turnaround times.
Fast (compressed) chromatography saves time but data is more likely to result in compound co-elution. TargetView software has been developed to automatically detect target compounds in a sample, no matter what the complexity. Direct liquid injection of an eau de toilette using both slow and fast oven ramps was carried out as proof.
Analytical system
GC:
- Column: 30 m, 0.25 mm ID, 0.25 µm HP INNOWax
- Flow: 1.5 mL/min

- Oven (slow): 80°C (1 min), 5°C/min, 250°C (2 min) - Run time 37 min
- Oven (fast): 80°C (1 min), 35°C/min, 260°C (4 min) - Run time 10.4 min

TargetView processing of the data was carried out with a target library of the 24 IFRA allergens applied.
Results
The data produced by slow chromatography was processed in TargetView, which identified 8 target allergenic compounds with high matches.
By using a fast oven ramp, the run time was decreased from approx. 40 min to less than 10 min. When processing this compressed chromatography, TargetView produces the same 8 results with equally high match values.

Conclusions
The identification of 8 of the 24 allergenic compounds provides the fragrance manufacturer with useful product information.
With even compressed chromatography containing multiple co-elutions, the data mining capability of TargetView has led to the identification of the same target compounds with equally high match values. This software allows manufacturers to speed up and simplify operation, effectively saving them money.
